What to wear on the Caminito del Rey

The Caminito del Rey has a dress code, and staff enforce it at the gate. Get the shoes and the bag right and the rest is common sense.

The rules on clothing and gear come from the mandatory standards and the prohibitions list on the official site. Some are about safety (shoes, no carrying children). Some are about space on a narrow boardwalk (no big backpacks, no selfie sticks). A few surprise people every day, umbrellas and walking poles among them.

There are no shops, fountains or toilets on the route. What you carry in at the north access is what you have for three to four hours.

The quick answer

Wear hiking shoes or closed walking shoes that grip the heel, light layers for the season and sunscreen. Carry a small daypack with at least 1.5 litres of water, a snack, your ID and cash for the shuttle. Leave the big backpack, the walking poles, the umbrella and the selfie stick behind.

What should you wear for the Caminito del Rey?

Hiking shoes, clothes for the season in layers, sun protection, and nothing that needs your hands.

The official recommendations ask for clothing suited to the season and hiking boots, especially for the uneven parts. Comfortable trousers or shorts are fine. There is no rule on clothing beyond the shoes, but the boardwalk is narrow, so a bulky coat or a bag on each shoulder gets in the way.

Plan for two climates in one day. The access path in the morning can be shaded and cool, and the open stretches later can be hot. Layers you can stuff into a daypack beat one heavy jacket.

What are the best shoes for the Caminito del Rey?

Hiking shoes or boots, or closed walking shoes with grip, fastened firmly at the heel. Flip-flops and heels are banned.

The mandatory rules ask for hiking footwear and say shoes must be fully secured to the foot, especially at the heel. Flip-flops, high heels and other unsuitable shoes are strictly prohibited. One tour listing adds open-toed shoes to the no list.

Our advice: trail shoes or light hiking boots you have already walked in. The surface changes between earth, wooden boards, ramps and stairs, and it can be slippery. A guest on the all-included trip from Málaga said it plainly: bring water and good shoes, because going down can be slippery. Brand-new boots on a 7.7 km downhill walk are a recipe for blisters.

Is it cold on the Caminito del Rey?

It can be, in winter and early in the day, when the gorge is still in shadow.

The official advice is to check the weather the day before and dress for the season. In winter, start with a warm layer and a windproof jacket. The listing for the day trip from Málaga tells guests to bring a jacket in winter. In spring and autumn, a light fleece for the shaded start is usually enough.

In summer the issue is the opposite. Wear light, breathable clothes and a hat for the access paths, use sunscreen, and carry more water than you think you need. The best time to visit guide explains the heat closures.

Can you walk the Caminito del Rey in the rain?

In light rain, yes, with a raincoat. Heavy rain or strong wind can close it.

The official FAQ says visits go ahead in light rain, umbrellas are not allowed, and a raincoat is required. Heavy rain or strong wind can close the route for safety, and strong wind closes the hanging bridge near Álora. Closure notices go out by email, text message, social media and the Telegram channel.

Wet boards and stairs are slippery, which makes the shoe rule matter more. A packable rain jacket or poncho weighs almost nothing. Bring one between November and April.

Do you need a hat or sunglasses with the helmet?

Sunglasses yes. A hat helps on the access paths, but the helmet stays on from the entrance to the exit.

The helmet is compulsory and provided at the entrance, and you keep it on until you hand it back at the end, according to the official safety sheet. A hygienic cap comes with it. A wide-brimmed sun hat will not fit under it, so pack it in your daypack for the walk to the gate and the wait for the shuttle.

Tie long hair back. Sunglasses are worth having on the open stretches, and sunscreen goes on before you reach the gate.

How much water and food should you bring?

At least 1.5 litres of water per person and a snack. There is no water, food or bin on the route.

The official recommendations ask for at least 1.5 litres per person. You can buy drinks from vending machines at the facilities, not on the path. Allowed snacks are energy bars, chocolate, nuts and fruit. You are asked to eat lunch before or after, since there is nowhere suitable to eat on the boardwalks.

Restaurante El Kiosko by the reservoir near the north access is the obvious place for a meal before the walk. There are no bins on the route, so keep your wrappers until the control booths.

What else should go in your daypack?

ID, your ticket on your phone, cash for the shuttle, sunscreen and a light layer.

  • ID for every walker. Adults must carry an identity document, and children aged 8 to 17 need proof of age, per the rules.
  • Your ticket. On your phone is fine. Download it first: the FAQ says phone signal is almost non-existent except on Vodafone.
  • Cash for the shuttle, unless you bought it online. The driver does not take cards.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • A light layer or rain jacket for the season.
  • Tissues. There are no toilets on the route, only at the entry, the exit and the Visitor Reception Centre.

The plain entry ticket: walk at your own pace with your own kit, free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
