The Caminito del Rey is open most of the year, from Tuesday to Sunday. Within that, weather does the sorting. Summer heat has closed the path on several days in recent years, and winter rain and wind have closed it on others. Spring is pleasant and booked out early.
The official site does not name a best season. What follows comes from its rules, the closure history and the pattern of ticket releases.
The quick answer
Go in April, May, late September or October for mild weather, and book the day the ticket block opens. In summer, avoid the midday slots. In winter, keep a free day in reserve in case wind or rain closes the route. Remember the Caminito is closed on Mondays, apart from a few announced dates.
When is the best time to visit the Caminito del Rey?
Spring and autumn: April, May, late September and October. Days are mild and the walk is comfortable.
Most independent guides agree on the shoulder seasons, and so do we. Summer is hot in the Guadalhorce valley and the high sections have little shade at midday. Winter brings rain and wind, which can close the route. In between, you get comfortable walking weather and long enough days for a relaxed lunch after.
The catch is that everybody knows this. The spring ticket block for 2026 sold most of its slots within a day, according to Andalucía Información. If you want April, buy in the first hours of the release.
A live guide and an entry slot, free cancellation up to 24 hours before: book your spring date early.
Book thisWhat is the Caminito del Rey like month by month?
Mild and busy in spring and autumn, hot in summer, quiet but more likely to close in winter.
A general picture, drawn from the official rules and the closure history. Weather varies from year to year, so check the forecast the day before, as the official recommendations ask:
| Months | What to expect | Tickets and crowds |
|---|---|---|
| December to February | Cool, quiet; rain and wind can close the route | Closed 24, 25, 31 Dec and 1 Jan; quieter days |
| March | Changeable; warmer days arrive | Holy Week can fall in March or April |
| April and May | Mild, green, comfortable walking | The first dates to sell out |
| June to August | Hot; heat closures have happened | Early and late slots go first |
| September | Hot at first, easier later | Busy weekends |
| October and November | Mild, then cooler and wetter | Some extra Monday openings |

Is the Caminito del Rey too hot in summer?
It can be. The path has closed for heat on several days in recent summers, and midday on the open stretches is tough.
Heat closures are not rare. The route shut for two days in August 2021 and on 11 July 2023, both reported by The Olive Press, and the official Telegram channel announced heat closures on 18 and 19 August 2025.
In July 2023 the management encouraged afternoon visits, saying the route has ample shade then and lower UV, and closed the entrance for an hour at the hottest time of day. Those arrangements may change from year to year, but the logic holds. Skip the midday slot in July and August, carry more than 1.5 litres of water, and wear sunscreen.

What time of day is best?
The first slots for quiet boardwalks, late slots in summer for shade. Skip the middle of the day in July.
Groups enter every 10 minutes from the morning onwards, so the first waves have the boardwalk mostly to themselves. The trade-off is light: early in the day the gorge is in shadow, which is cooler but flatter for photos. Afternoon slots in summer had more shade, according to the management's 2023 advice.
Exact slot times change with the season and are set on the booking platform. Check your ticket for yours, and remember you must be at the access 30 minutes before it. Coming by train? Your slot also has to fit the Renfe timetable, as the getting there guide explains.

Pick your slot, meet the guide at the control booth and hear the story of the gorge through a radio headset.
Book this Tour detailsIs the Caminito del Rey open all year?
Almost. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, closes on Mondays and on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January.
The mandatory rules give the calendar: open Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Mondays and on four days around Christmas and New Year, plus any other closures the administration announces. A handful of Mondays open each season. In the second half of 2026, Canal Sur listed 11 extra Monday openings, with 19 October and 2 November still to come.
Opening hours are set by the management company and published on the booking platform. They are longer in summer and shorter in winter. Check the platform for your date rather than times printed elsewhere.
What about rain and wind in winter?
They close the route on some days. Book with a spare day in your trip, and watch for notices 24 hours before.
The official FAQ says light rain does not stop visits, but heavy rain or strong wind can. If no closure notice arrives 24 hours before, the visit normally goes ahead, though it can still be cancelled during the day. The Telegram channel shows weather closures on many days in February and March 2025 and again in the winter of 2025-2026.
If the route closes, official tickets can be exchanged for another date, subject to availability. Tours on GetYourGuide cancel free up to 24 hours before, which makes them the safer booking for a short winter trip.
A coach from Málaga or the coast, the entry and a guide, with a full refund or new date if the trail closes for weather.
Book thisWhen is the Caminito del Rey busiest?
Spring weekends and holiday weeks. Groups go in every 10 minutes, so busy means a queue at the gate and company on the boardwalk.
The Caminito has had about 330,000 visitors a year recently, according to El Español, and more than half come from abroad. The spring block, with Holy Week, sells fastest. Weekends sell before weekdays in every season.
For a quieter walk, pick a Tuesday to Thursday, the first slot of the day, and a month outside spring. November and early December have the fewest crowds, at the cost of shorter days and a higher chance of rain.

What can you do instead if it is closed or sold out?
See Ronda's gorge from above, visit the Cueva de Ardales, or come back on a spare day.
If the path closes or your dates are gone, the area has other things to do. The Cueva de Ardales, a Palaeolithic cave with painted figures, opens for guided visits in small groups that must be booked ahead. The ruins of Bobastro, with a rock-cut church, lie near El Chorro and are one of the landmarks in the World Heritage candidacy.
Further away, Ronda puts you on top of a gorge instead of inside one. The Ronda and Setenil day trip runs from Málaga and adds Setenil de las Bodegas, a village built under its rocks.

Ronda's bridge over the El Tajo gorge, then the cave houses of Setenil, from Málaga in one day.
